Producing Fashion Symposium

Producing Fashion is held in response to the exhibition Walter Van Beirendonck Dream the World Awake from MoMu Fashion Museum, Province of Antwerp, an event staged to critique the role of the independent practitioner or small enterprise in creative industry within an increasingly homogenised and branded global design environment.

Walter Van Beirendonck has built an impressive international career. The international design leader shows his menswear collections in Paris each season as well as being the inspirational Head of Fashion at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Art. He has collaborated with some of the world’s most respective creatives, including performance artist Orlan, legendary fashion photographer Nick Knight and Australian designer Marc Newson.

Producing Fashion sets up an engagement with the design community to consider the nature and influence of small creative enterprise;  to study how these activities influence and define ideas about fashion, national identity and place-branding;  and to communicate distinctive and sustainable approaches to the design and production of clothes.

Invited guests include Professor Frances Corner, Head of the London College of Fashion and Professor of Art and Design Education.  Her paper will discuss London’s centre for creative enterprise, support for emerging design talent and the Fashion Colloquia series, interrogating the role of the fashion week.
