This workshop is an introduction to listening to sound art. Associate professor Philip Samartzis has taught at RMIT for 20 years and in this program he will provide participants with some simple techniques for approaching the task of how to listen to audio works. Sound art, unlike the visual arts, remains a less than common encounter on the exhibition landscape and, arguably as a result, we are largely under-equipped in how to ‘tune in’ to its qualities. To guide us in this task, Philip will examine the ecoacoustic and geophysical characteristics of Antarctic and subantarctic environments using sound recordings he made in East Antarctica and Macquarie Island.
